Sony announces Skype for PSP
Published January 7th, 2008
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) has announced that it will be integrating popular Voice over Internet Protocol client Skype into its Play Station Portable (PSP) games console.
Using Skype, users of slim and lite models of the PSP will be able to communicate with their Skype contacts in much the same manner as on a PC. Sony’s PSP sales are lagging behind that of rival Nintendo’s DS handheld because of the innovative and unique games being put out on the market by the latter.
Sony is hoping that by introducing Skype features, users will be drawn to its handheld because Skype has an estimated 246 million members using its services.
The Nikkei business daily reported that Sony will be adding Skype to new models of PSP, but Sony spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka did not confirm these reports. PSP users wishing to take advantage of this service will need to get a Memory Stick Duo as well as an audio device that is Skype compatible.
Sony revealed that the new features will also be sent out in a software update that is due for release in late January. “After updating the PSP system software, a Skype icon will be added to the Network category in the home menu. PSP users who do not yet have a Skype username can register by clicking the icon and following the instructions,” Sony added in a press release.
Founded by Niklas Zennstrom in 2003, Skype hit the peak when it was acquired by auction giant eBay in 2005.
