Leonard Auction to Sell Large Turzak Collection

Published January 5th, 2008

Leonard Auction will offer a collection of twenty-seven woodcut prints by Charles Turzak at our January 19th Auction in Addison, Illinois. The prints were originally purchased at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago and have remained in the same private collection since that time.

About Charles Turzak:
Charles Turzak was born in 1899 in Streator, Illinois. Following high school he attended the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. Upon graduation in 1924, Turzak began his career as a free-lance artist. Turzak cut many woodblocks for the 1933 World’s Fair and his work was prominently featured at that event. Following his success at the World’s Fair, Turzak participated in several federal depression-era art programs that allowed him to develop several woodcuts into murals. One of these murals still survives at the Post Office in Lemont, Illinois. Charles Turzak died in 1986.

Examples of Turzak’s work may be found in the collections of Library of Congress, Yale University Art Gallery, The Art Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University’s Mary and Leigh Block Gallery and the Illinois.
