York Simpson Underwood Makes History with Art Referral
Published December 9th, 2007
York Simpson Underwood of Raleigh, North Carolina, made Christie’s Great Estates history by setting the mark for the highest priced art ever referred to Christie’s by an affiliate. Andrew Wyeth’s The Intruder, which was consigned by a York Simpson Underwood client, sold for $5.75 million at Christie’s November 29 Important American Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture sale in New York City, and was the top-selling lot in the sale and the second highest auction price ever for the artist.
The tempera on panel work was executed in 1971 on the Goose River in Maine, and features the artist’s yellow Labrador Retriever standing at attention on a rock in midstream. The lot, which captures the haunting realism that has made Wyeth one of the most enduring figures in American art, was the sale’s top-seller, and the second highest auction price ever for that artist.
“I am thrilled by this record set by York Simpson Underwood,” says Rick Moeser, Vice President of the Southeast Region. “The sale of the Andrew Wyeth painting demonstrates how Christie’s auction house and Christie’s Great Estates affiliated real estate brokerages can create a powerful business synergy.”
“Christie’s is another one of the valuable ways York Simpson Underwood provides full service to our clients,” said Wendy Jackson, Vice President of Relocation Services and Exceptional Homes & Estates at York Simpson Underwood Realty. “Not only do we offer full service residential real estate, but through our exclusive affiliation with Christie’s Great Estates, we can offer our clients auction house services. We are so pleased with this great affiliation.”
