Bonhams Throws Open the Doors of Country Treasure Trove

Published November 6th, 2007

AntiquesPublicity.com - Within Park House lies an intriguing time warp that chronicles the glamorous life of Mrs Dorothy Knight. This discerning antiques expert built up a remarkable and diverse collection over 40 years, all of which will be auctioned by Bonhams in Chester on the 13 November 2007.

Dorothy Knight, who died earlier this year, led a jet set life as the wife of Reg Harris (OBE) the Olympic medallist and World Champion track cyclist. They were treated as celebrities and travelled widely at a time when overseas travel was still rare. When they divorced, she moved to Park House on the beautiful Swythamley Estate near Macclesfield and married Major John Knight who tragically died in a car crash just 18 months after they were married. She never remarried after this, but remained wedded to her passion for antiques. She is remembered fondly as a true lady, a wildlife lover and devoted gardener.

Dorothy owned antiques shops in Macclesfield and London until 1994, and used her trained eye to build up a vast collection. The sale will include an eclectic mix of items, from furniture to works of art, garden ornaments to porcelain. Star lots include some fine furniture, such as an impressive George I walnut longcase clock, estimated at £3,000-5,000, and a stunning late 17th Century walnut and floral marquetry chest, estimated at £4,000-6,000. Amongst the more unusual lots is a 1930s stone garden ornament in the form of an impish crouching monkey, estimated at £400- 600.
